Cops Bust 3-Mile Pot Garden Worth $195 Million E-mail

Authorities seized 61,000 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $195 million from a garden covering a "three mile area" east of the Twitchell Resrvoir along Highway 166, officials said Monday.

It was one of the largest such operations in recent Santa Barbara County history, more than doubling 2006 totals. The discovery resulted in three arrests. The plants were spotted from a helicopter during a routine patrol, officials said.

Man Arrested after 3-Hour Eastside Stand-Off E-mail

An alleged gang member was arrested Thursday afternoon on the Eastside after a three-hour standoff with police, who said that earlier this week he was reportedly involved in a battery, threats of violence and unrelated vandalism in violation of his probation. Daniel Ortiz, 22, emerged distraught and with a slit wrist, officials said.

Cops Demonstrate Dangers of Valuables Left in Parked Vehicles E-mail

In an effort to drive home the risk of leaving valuables in a parked car, the Santa Barbara Police Department staged a mock car burglary Thursday morning. With a scrum of TV and newspaper cameras at the ready, a detective posing as a car thief shattered the window of a car on loan from Allstate Insurance, and then made off with a laptop computer.

Judge: Priest Files Should Be Open To Public E-mail

The personnel files of Catholic priests who abused 25 children in Santa Barbara may be opened for public scrutiny after a precedent-setting decision handed down Monday by a Los Angeles County judge.

Judge Peter Lichtman wrote in his ruling that the protection of children outweighs the abusing priests’ expectation of privacy because they have either admitted to abuse or shown “dangerous propensities towards youth."

The released information could include their home addresses.

Three Arrested on Suspicion of Killing Homeless Man E-mail

Three men were arrested on suspicion of homicide Thursday in connection with allegedly beating to death a homeless man whose body was found just hours earlier near a transient encampment where Upper State Street crosses Highway 101, authorities said.

Authorities suspect the 49-year-old man -- whose identity deputies are not releasing until his family is notified of his death -- was allegedly murdered early Thursday morning.

Robert Sladek, 38; Russell Mell, 39; and Brian Rose, 40, were booked into County Jail and held with no bail after being questioned at the crime scene — a grassy, tree-dotted area adjacent to the State Street bridge.
