In two new reports, the County Grand Jury takes aim at the health care for inmates in the county jail, and at procedures for releasing undocumented inmates who are serving time there.The jury is critical of the county's practice of housing mentally ill inmates together with the general jail population. About 120 inmates out of an average 725 in the main jail on Calle Real receive medication for mental illness, the jury report states. |

The year-long criminal case of the woman who reportedly locked her children in rooms filthy with rotting food and human waste came to an end Friday -- with the judge refusing to reduce the charges leveled against Sylvia Vasquez from a felony to a misdemeanor.
This ruling means that Vasquez, 51, likely will be required to serve a majority of the remaining 162 days of her one-year sentence for child abuse at Santa Barbara County Jail. |

A Goleta city councilman retires this week from the Santa Barbara Police Department, capping a 32-year career in law enforcement.
Officer Roger Aceves, 52, got his first job with the department in 1975 working dispatch. In 1977, he became a Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputy — returning to the Police Department as an officer in 1981.
He was elected to the Goleta City Council in December 2006. Recently, he has participated in ongoing talks between Goleta and the Sheriff's Department over renewal of a multi-year policing contract between the two. |
