A teacher was arrested on suspicion of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, culminating a month-long investigation into allegations she was having inappropriate relations with her male students, authorities said.
Kelli Jo Camp Kelli Jo Camp, 28, served as a temporary teacher at New Cuyama High School, said Sgt. Erik Raney, a spokesman for the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department said Wednesday.
She was arrested late Tuesday afternoon. The victim is a 17-year-old male student, Raney said.
"New Cuyama High School administrators first contacted the Sheriff’s Department because of a growing concern," Raney said in a statement. "They cited occasions over the course of several months where Camp had received greeting cards from the victim expressing his love for her, as well as finding pictures of the victim in her desk."
According to school administrators, Camp was “very close to her male students," Raney said.
Administrators had also noted that male students would often visit her classroom, he said.
During the course of the investigation, detectives recovered e-mails between Camp and the victim alluding to an alleged consensual sexual relationship between them, Raney said.
Camp was arrested at the Valarie House - Changing Faces group home in the 200 block of North Valarie Street in Santa Maria, where she works as manager, authorities said.
At New Cuyama, Camp apparently was teaching while she was earning credit elsewhere toward obtaining her teaching credentials, authorities said.
In addition to working at New Cuyama, she reportedly worked as an instructor at Righetti High School in Santa Maria towards the beginning of this school year, authorities said. She also has worked as a cheerleading instructor at Lakeview Jr. High School in Orcutt and a cheerleading coach at Central Coast Shock Wave in Santa Maria, Raney said. |
