An Isla Vista house fire displaced more than a dozen people and burned out of control for nearly an hour late Friday, drawing a heavy response from firefighters who were forced to rip open a ceiling to extinguish the blaze, officials said.

The American Red Cross was headed to the scene to assist 13 people -- mostly students -- displaced from the roughly 3,000 square foot single family home at 6607 Del Playa Dr., according to late dispatches from authorities.

Called for help at 8:49 p.m., firefighters found “a heavy volume of smoke coming from the garage,” said Capt. Eli Eskow, of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. “Firefighters found fire in the ceiling of the bathroom that was adjacent to the garage. They staged an aggressive attack of the fire from the bathroom and the hallway where it had extended.” An Isla Vista house fire displaced more than a dozen people and burned out of control for nearly an hour late Friday, drawing a heavy response from firefighters who managed to rip open a ceiling to extinguish the blaze, officials said.
