New Miramar Owner Courts Crowd With Hotel Plan E-mail

More than 300 people clapped and cheered Tuesday in Montecito in support of a proposal to combine five-star luxury with public access and recreation at the historic and vacant Miramar Hotel. Developer Rick Caruso is the latest in a string of builders to take on the old guest property, which dates to the 19th Century.

Solvang City Fire Folds After Decades of Service E-mail

A “changing of the guard” ceremony at the Solvang fire station on Monday formally marked the merger of the city’s volunteer department with the county Fire Department, ending a 76-year tradition in Solvang.

Four of 15 on-call Solvang firefighters hired as rookies are now being trained for 24-7 duties.

Homeless Make Easter Trek to Oprah's House E-mail

Easter Time of Hope, Fun for Kids E-mail

Services will be held throughout Santa Barbara County today, including Calvary Chapel's annual Easter extravaganza. It typically draws thousands to the Courthouse Sunken Gardens.

Late Blaze Uproots 13 on Del Playa E-mail

An Isla Vista house fire displaced more than a dozen people and burned out of control for nearly an hour late Friday, drawing a heavy response from firefighters who were forced to rip open a ceiling to extinguish the blaze, officials said.

The American Red Cross was headed to the scene to assist 13 people -- mostly students -- displaced from the roughly 3,000 square foot single family home at 6607 Del Playa Dr., according to late dispatches from authorities.

Called for help at 8:49 p.m., firefighters found “a heavy volume of smoke coming from the garage,” said Capt. Eli Eskow, of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. “Firefighters found fire in the ceiling of the bathroom that was adjacent to the garage. They staged an aggressive attack of the fire from the bathroom and the hallway where it had extended.”
