Airport Runway Work Likely to Begin This Month E-mail

A contract to begin work on a $14 million realignment of the main runway at Santa Barbara Municpal Airport could be signed this week by Santa Barbara city officials and Granite Construction. The work, to be mostly paid for by the federal government, would begin in late April and finish in the fall.

Council to Discuss Tightening Neighborhood Growth Law E-mail

After nearly three years of heated debate, controversial changes to the city's rules on home expansion and design will likely clear a key hurdle this week.

The so-called Neighborhood Preservation Ordinance, which spells out what homeowners can and can’t do when it comes to building on their property, goes before Santa Barbara’s Ordinance Committee for review Tuesday.

The next and final stop for the ordinance is the City Council, which could approve the changes as early as May 1.

Measure D Vote Could Impact County's Share of Bond Money E-mail

Santa Barbara County will suffer if residents don't renew Measure D, the half-percent sales tax, state Assemblyman Pedro Nava told politicians and department heads at City Hall on Friday.

The state's $20 billion pot of transportation bond money, approved by the voters in November, will go first and foremost to the counties that tax themselves to help solve traffic congestion, state officials said at the workshop in Santa Barbara.

"If you have nothing to come to the table with, that's what you're going to leave the table with," Janet Dawson, chief consultant to the state Assembly Transportation Committee, told a group of local politicians and department heads at City Hall.

The workshop was convened by Nava, D-Santa Barbara, who chairs the Transportation Committee. While Nava was accompanied Friday by state parks and housing officials, the ins and outs of how to compete for transportation funding against Los Angeles and the Bay Area dominated the discussion.

Fierce Debate Brewing In Goleta Planning Fray E-mail

A new council majority is in charge, and setting the stage to dramatically amend a wide range of general plan policies.
