It was a pleasure to get back to writing in-depth local news. SBN Today, we’ll shut down our Web site and call it quits on reporting online at SantaBarbaraNewsroom.com.We’ve enjoyed writing for the Web, a new experience for all of us print reporters who were illegally fired from the Santa Barbara News-Press. It’s been great running our own show, free of interference from an abusive publisher. We hope we have been of service to you since we launched the site on April 2. We simply don’t have the funds to continue online indefinitely. But we are not going away! It’s time to step up our campaign for reinstatement to the News-Press and a Teamster contract in the newsroom. Beginning Aug. 14, we will be on the witness stand as the News-Press goes on trial in Santa Barbara on charges of 15 violations of federal labor law, including our firings. Fire Exceeds 13,000 Acres The Zaca Fire grew to 13,200 acres and was 37 percent contained Thursday, established in the San Rafael Wilderness east of Manzana and south of the Sisquoc River. More than 2,000 firefighters battled the blaze that began July 4 nine miles north of Los Olivos near Zaca Lake and spread to Los Padres National Forest.
THANK YOU, SANTA BARBARA!

On the one-year anniversary of the News-Press mess, we need your help now more than ever. Wendy McCaw, the owner and co-publisher, has forced out or fired nearly 50 journalists from her newsroom since July 6, 2006. The damage done could take years to repair. But we do not subscribe to the belief, sometimes heard around town, that McCaw’s millions make her invincible. For the past three months, we have been trying to provide quality local journalism daily online. Now we must raise enough money to keep our site going for a year or more, until McCaw has exhausted her appeals and we are reinstated at the News-Press. Without your help, we will have to shut down SantaBarbaraNewsroom.com this month. |

We're disappointed that the National Labor Relations Board has voted not to seek a court order that would immediately reinstate us to our rightful jobs as reporters at the Santa Barbara News-Press. The board's 3-2 vote on Friday means that Wendy McCaw, the News-Press owner, can continue to delay justice for months on end, hoping, no doubt, that we will give up and leave town. Make no mistake: We will win our case for reinstatement in the end. The general counsel of the labor board earlier this month issued a complaint against McCaw for firing all eight of us. The trial is set to begin Aug. 14 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court building on State Street. It's slated to end on Sept. 14, with a few breaks in between. |

We cleared a big hurdle this week at Santa Barbara Newsroom, launching the first installment of our public access television news show. Broadcast journalism is a challenging new world for most of us, a group of reporters accustomed to working our beats outside the gaze of a camera. Stepping beyond the relative anonymity of a newspaper byline is not an easy proposition for a bunch of print journalists, but we think it's worth it. By no means are we pretending to be broadcast journalists. We are not. But we do want to give you a show that you will find informational and educational. Truth be told, there's still a large population of Santa Barbara County residents unwilling or unable to venture online for its news. We expect to reach an ever-expanding audience on Channel 17. |

Since we created Santa Barbara Newsroom online one month ago, we have received many encouraging messages of goodwill and many queries from you, our readers, as to how you can support our Web site. We would like you to know that we are soliciting donations of any size, large or small, to cover our operating expenses and help us make ends meet. Time is not on our side in this lopsided contest in the courts with Wendy McCaw, the owner of the Santa Barbara News-Press. The truth is that the labor laws of this country give employers a long leash to exercise their abuse of power. *** Donate Now *** |
