Emmitt Smith was a leading NFL ball-carrier.
Apolo Anton Ohno was an Olympic champion speedskater. On the ballroom floor, they beat out other celebrities in "Dancing With the Stars."
I confess: I watched Ohno's recent triumph on television.
It was an illustration of the convergence between sports and art.
Another example is provided by Isabel Dickinson, a musician and athlete from Santa Barbara High. |

Dos Pueblos High pole vaulters Daniel Turvey and David Williford finished 1-2 in the CIF Division 2 Championships on Saturday.
Both cleared 14 feet, 3 inches. But to qualify for the State Championships, they'll have to go higher. Both boys said the pole vault appealed to their "crazy" instincts and, on Monday afternoon, things definitely got crazy.
The Southern Section qualifying meet will take place Friday at Cerritos.

Nobody thought the men's pro beach volleyball tour could be dominated by any one team, but so far this year Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser are defying the conventional wisdom. They won their fourth title in five AVP events Sunday at Hermosa Beach -- the same rate of success that has been achieved by the peerless Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh on the women's side.
Rogers, who played San Marcos High and UCSB, is one of many successful volleyball players to come out of this area. The local prep scene is still robust -- Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos are hosting CIF semifinal matches on Wednesday night. |

Brad Ebner's heartwarming appearance brought the crowd to its feet at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame banquet. The injured running back received a special award.
Meanwhile, Robert Horry's ugly foul on Steve Nash brought the Phoenix Suns to their feet, creating a major controversy in the NBA. Santa Barbara's hometown basketball team, the Breakers, prefers shooting to shoving. They scored 161 points in their last game. |

The vicissitudes of baseball were cruel to local teams over the weekend. SBCC's marvelous season went up in flames when a ninth-inning rally by L.A. Harbor knocked the Vaqueros out of the playoffs.
Long Beach State erased two UCSB leads in the late innings, and former Santa Barbara High and Gaucho pitching star Virgil "Matt" Vasquez was battered in his major league debut.

The 40th annual Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame banquet tonight (Monday, May 14) will swell the membership of the local sports shrine to 229. John Stoney is the sixth two-timer in the Hall of Fame.
The former San Marcos High football and golf coach was enshrined in the coaches' wing in 1995. Tonight he will be honored in the "special achievement" category for his 37 years as a guy who blows a whistle, calls fouls, and decides strikes.
Yes, this community is so fair-minded about sports that it pays tribute to referees and umpires. |

It must have been a heck of a catch.
When Al Gionfriddo ran down a long drive at the fence during the 1947 World Series, he made a lasting impression on everybody who was in Yankee Stadium that day. One of them was Joe DiMaggio, the man who hit what appeared to be a sure home run.
Another was David Halberstam, a 13-year-old future author in the crowd. |

With $100,000 at stake, the volleyball became heavy for local AVP pros Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser. But after they apparently blew their chance to win the jackpot at Huntington Beach, the previously downtrodden team of Jake Gibb and Stein Metzger did them a huge favor. Meanwhile, City College is bracing for a big weekend of baseball at Pershing Park, and the Westmont College basketball team is getting a little help from UCSB. |

Kaylene Wagner sought out a coach who could maximize her potential, and she is on the rise at Kansas State University. The former Dos Pueblos High athlete bested three-time Olympian Amy Acuff while winning the high jump at the Drake Relays.
Another rising track and field star is Carpinteria's Noah Bryant, who broke a 35-year USC record in the shot put in competition against UCLA.
Ariana Gnekow of Santa Ynez is making her mark in college basketball. After a solid freshman season at UCSB, she has been awarded a scholarship. |
